After his arrest and transfer to the Finney County jail in Garden City, Perry Smith had become close with Undersheriff Wendle Meier and his wife, Josephine, for the few months prior to being transferred to Kansas State Penitentiary at Lansing. Perry and the Meiers shared many years of visits and correspondence until his execution. This letter, dated March 21, 1965, was Perry’s last correspondence with the Meiers, written just over three weeks before he and Richard Hickock would be hanged for their crimes on April 14, 1965.
